Ummm...maybe I didn't see the same movie...but I did see the movie called "A
Knight's Tale"...not to mention a commercial or two.
It never, ever, ever claimed to be accurate. In fact, one of the
commercials said flat out "If you're looking for accuracy, stay home" (not
in so many words, I actually believe the wording was much harsher)
It took Jousting and made it into a farcical sports movie. And it did it in
an entertaining, family-friendly, lighthearted way. Young kinds can laugh
at the funny moments, adults can catch the hidden Chaucer references (and I
don't just mean the existence of the character), and it was done with nobody
dying on camera, virtually no 4 letter words (possibly none, although I
think the S word was in ther once or twice, in a variation), and no frontal
nudity. They did an eexcellent job, in my mind.
If 80% of the costumes were vaugely medievalish, that's a bonus. If any of
the armor was medievalish, that's way cool. If the tents were accurate,
then that's yet more niftiness.
It wasn't claiming to be accurate, nor period. If you went into it
expecting that, you should have been clued in by "We will Rock You" inside
of the first 3 minutes.
Just enjoy the film, folks. I heartily recommend it for a good time that
SCA folk might enjoy just a bit more than the average person, because we
know the "real" history behind it, so we can laugh at the ways they pervert
it.
