Southern Atlantian A&S Symposium II
Canton of Misty Marsh by the Sea, Florence, SC
                                
The Canton of Misty Marsh invites the noble gentles of Faire Atlantia to our 
borders.  If you yearn for knowledge or new skills, come - join us, as we 
seek to keep the light of learning alive. The event will be held at Francis 
Marion University in Florence, SC.  Site opens and registration begins at 
8am, with classes running from 9am to noon and 1pm to 5pm.

Current class schedule is as follows (REVISED 6/26/01 and subject to changes):

Thrown Weapons Set-up and Rules - (THL Lord Volgaar Thorgulsson)

Basic Shyrts & Chemises (2 hours) - (Baroness Julianna Fiorentini and Lady 
Lina St. Albans) Learn how
to construct a basic chemise or shyrt without use of a pattern.  You may 
watch and learn, or you can
actually make a chemise on-site.  Bring 6to 8 yards of pre-washed cotton 
fabric, matching thread, a
tape measure, and scissors.  There will be several sewing machines set up for 
general use, but you
may bring your own if you prefer. 

Beginning Middle Eastern Dance - (Lady Kisaiya Zingara) Brief overview of the 
history of
middle eastern dance, its place in the SCA and how to do it.

Natural Dyeing (Favour Project Part 1) - (Lady Bridget O'Shay) Make a Favour 
from start to finish! 
 This is a two part class.  In this first part, you will dye linen and thread 
using natural dyeing 
methods.  After it has dried in the sun, you will learn to embroider your 
initial or design to 
create a personal favour, which you may then present to someone you care 
about.  This workshop is 
intended for children, but adults are welcome to participate.  Only non-toxic 
dyes will be used 
(beets, onion skins, tea, etc.).  You will be dyeing your very own linen 
square in your choice of 
dye to begin your favour!

Knife Throwing - (THL Volgaar Thorgulsson)

SCA Heraldry Introduction (2 hours) - (Lord Alleyne Blackburn) A basic intro 
to SCA
Heraldry for heralds and general populace.  Covers the basics of heraldry in 
hopefully easy to
understand terms.  Will give a basic outline of the submission process and 
cover heraldic displays. 
There will be handouts for those attending.

Beginning Single and Double Lucent - (Lady Lydia Lijovich of Ragusa) Learn to 
enjoy the
simple process of creating period cord, which is extremely strong and highly 
functional, with the
lucet tool!  Experience the satisfaction of replacing that ribbon in your 
bodice with a strong, yet
attractive binding that you have produced yourself!  In addition, the double 
lucet will also be
discussed.  Class participants will be able to demonstrate the ability to use 
a single lucet by the
end of the class.  Class fee is $7.00, which includes a lovely cherry wood 
lucet and string to
produce cord with, as well as hand-outs ($2 if you have your own lucet).  
Double lucets will also
be available for sale, at an additional cost of $10.00.  All proceeds go to 
the Knowne Whorle
Spinning Guild.  Class limited to 12.

Creating a Gypsy Persona - (Lady Kisaiya Zingara) A timeline of Romany 
History and
costuming ideas.

Beginning Rapier (2 hours) - (William Welwyn) An introduction to rapier from 
a period
perspective.  Issues covered include finding a comfortable stance, the 
various methods
for holding a rapier, movement on the field, and the basic rules for Rapier 
Combat in Atlantia. 
 Emphasis will be on developing basics that can be taken home and practiced 
through various 
drills that will be introduced.  There will be a handout of rapier terms from 
the Italian fencing 
styles that will be used during instruction.  Class limit 10.

MoL 101  (Mistress Ceridwen ferch Owain)  This is THE required class to 
become a warranted
MoL in Atlantia!

Bayeaux Tapestry Stitch/Laidwork and Couching - (Sine ni Dheaghaidh) How to 
do the stitch
used in the Bayeaux Tapestry.  Class limit 8.  Class fee $3.00 for kit.

Introduction to SCA Arts & Sciences - (Lady Kisaiya Zingara) Brief 
introduction to the
Society, how to get involved, with a concentration on getting involved in the 
Arts and Sciences.

Drawstring Pouches - (Lady Lina St. Albans) Have you ever wondered where in 
your garb to 
stash all that critically important stuff we all have to carry everywhere we 
go?  Have you ever
needed to give a period gift, but handmade gifts take so much time?  Have you 
ever regretted
that you didn't have a use for some of your lovely scraps of period fabric 
left over from garb-making? 
Here is an answer to all these questions: learn to make (and take with you) a 
simple rectangular 
pouch and a slightly more complex (and period) round pouch.  Directions 
provided for lined and 
unlined pouches, with suggestions for sources of materials and uses for the 
finished project. 
Class limit 8.  Class fee $1.00.

Ribbon Braiding - (Sine ni Dheighaidh) Turn ordinary 1/8" ribbon into trim or 
carriers for your
medallions.  Class limit 12.  Class fee $1.00 for ribbon.

Axe Throwing - (THL Volgaar Thorgulsson)

Pattern Making 101 (3 hours) - (Lady Anastasia dello Scudo Russo) This class 
will help you
create patterns for SCAdian and mundane clothing.  Learn to read store bought 
patterns, how to
enlarge and reduce them; mannequins, the essential helper; all about store 
bought and making
your own Muslins; making wearable patterns; and basic garb shapes, learning 
about resources 
and more!  You might wish to bring a notepad.  Muslin is helpful, but not 
required.

So You Want to be a Herald - (Lord Alleyne Blackburn) A general overview of 
the duties and
requirements for members of the College of Arms.  Suggested for any Cornet 
heralds and those
interested in becoming a herald.  Will cover the basics of book, court and 
field heraldry, as well as 
the submission process and how to keep your submitters happy.  Bring a 
notebook if you want to 
take notes.

Hidden Mundanities - (Baroness Julianna Fiorentini) Creating the ambiance of 
the Middle Ages
takes more than putting on funny clothes.  Learn how to make fabric covers to 
hide those ghastly
mundane items - coolers, chairs, water bottles, even tiki torches!  We will 
discuss the basic
geometry of different items, and how that translates into fabric, and I will 
demonstrate how to
make a chair cover.  If you wish, you may bring an item that you've been 
wanting to cover for a
long time, but just don't know how!  Bring fabric and a tape measure, and we 
will do yours as time
allows.

Scribing Under Pressure - (Lady Brigh ingen Erinaugh) A discussion of the 
tips and tricks of
getting those scrolls done in a pinch without burning the candle at both 
ends.  Class limit is 15. 
Class fee is $1.00 for handout.

Introduction to Medieval Poetry - (Master Bran Trefonnen) The Middle Ages 
featured a wide
variety of poetic voices almost all of which changed the face of western 
literature.  Contrary to
what you may think, this poetry is very accessible to modern readers and can 
be deeply
appreciated.

Embroidery for Absolute Beginners - (Lady Lina St. Albans) If you want to get 
started in
embroidery but haven't known where to begin, this class is for you.  Learn 
half a dozen basic
period stitches, and gain some information and insight on period thread, 
fabric, and design
elements.  Class limit 8.  No fee or $3.00 if you wish to keep the needle and 
hoop.

Learning to Spin with a Drop Spindle (2 hours) - (Lady Siobhan nic 
Dhuinnshleibhe) Class fee
is $7.00 for materials which include a drop spindle and wool to practice on.

Roundtable Discussion on Children and the SCA - (Lady Bridget O'Shay)

Early Irish Monks History - (Master Bran Trefonnen) Inspired from the pages 
of the Mayhem,
learn about the line of early Irish monks who birthed the likes of Andrew 
Scotus and brought
civilization to a nation!

Easy Embroidery (Favour Project Part 2) - (Lady Lina St. Albans and Lady 
Bridget O'Shay) 
Learn simple stitches to embroider your initial or design on your favour.



This class schedule is subject to additions, deletions and time changes!

There will be a lunch available on site during the noon to 1pm break for 
$3.00.

The site is Francis Marion University, PO Box 100547, Florence, SC 
29501-0547.  The buildings
are Cauthen Education Media Center and Founder's Hall.  The site opens at 8am 
and closes at
6pm.

Directions: Take your best route to Florence, SC.  On I-95, take exit 170 
(Hwy 327) south
toward Florence.  At the junction of 327 and Hwy 301, turn LEFT.  At the next 
stoplight, turn
RIGHT.  Francis Marion University will be on your left.  Turn LEFT into Gate 
3 and an
immediate LEFT again into Lot B.  Straight across from Lot B, you will see 
the site - follow signs 
to registration.  SCA signs will be posted by the wonderful Baron Luqman 
al-Maghrebi.
