Track 1

10:00 Trebuchet 101.  Lady Alienor de Narbonne (Denise Nelson):  Topics to be covered include history, usage, and construction.  A working model will be on display. 

11:00  A Survey of Illuminations  THL Eldred Ælfwald (mka: J.T.Thorpe)  A survey of medieval illuminations from the scriptorium of Durham Cathedral and Lindesfarne Monastery. The evolution of style and illumination is discussed. Color slides and B&W class notes.  No class limit, no fees.

1:00 Medieval Pigments and Paints, Lady Sophia of Falcon Cree (Tya Hotelling)
 What colors should best be used if you want your illuminations, paintings  and icons  to resemble period pieces?  What colors should be avoided?  Where do I  find these  period pigments?  What can I substitute?  This class will describe and show what pigments were used in period, and  discuss the benefits  and detriments of each.  Where necessary, available pigments will be  substituted and directions  for safe handling will be given.  Period paint mixing will be discussed,  and well as painting mediums and grounds (canvases, panels, vellum and  paper) .  I will describe proper preparation  needed for each and will answer questions about all media, even the  stepchildren--acrylic and alkyd paints.  A color guide page will be available for each attendee.  Fee: $1.00.  Class limit: 12.  

2:00 Canting of Arms THL Eldred Ælfwald ( J.T.Thorpe): 
 Heralds don't pun, they cant!  This is a both an historical overview of some canted period arms and names, and examples of the same in the Current Middle Ages.  Drop in and see if we can or can't cant
*your* arms!




3:00 ­ Spanish Art  in the Middle Ages Lady Sophia of Flacon Cree (Tya Hotelling)
A summary of major styles and tracing of where the most profound  influences originated. A small dose of politics cannot be avoided, but I will concentrate on the  art.  I will show many examples of craft items and provide a color copy handout to the  class.  Fee: $2.00   Class limit: 12 
 
Track 2
10:00-12:00 Duct Tape Dummies ­ Lady Alessandra Foscari (Michelle Williamson)-
For those people who always wanted a dressmaker's dummy, but never bothered to purchase one for  whatever reason. A two hour, hands on class to make your body double. Please bring  T-Shirt.  Duct tape will be available  for purchase at class for $3.00.   Limit class to 12 people.

    
1:00:­Kumihimo: Techniques of Ancient Japanese Braiding (Caitriona Inghean Ghiolla Dhadraig) ­ (Jennifer Dutschke)  This class is a beginner's  class in Japanese plaiting. Participants will learn the history of braiding in Japan, an introduction to the materials and how they were used, and a demonstration of a simple 4-strand braid for hands on experience. Instructor will make available advanced kits available. Materials fee: $5. Class Limit: 5. 

 2:00 Needle Lace Tatting ­ Lady Caitriona inghean Ghiolla Phadraig ­ (Jennifer Dutschke) 
While not period to the SCA, needle tatting is an easy and enjoyable way to make beautiful laces.  The student will be taught how to needle tat using the Ring and Thread method and the Ring and Chain
method.  All materials will be provided so there will be a fee of $5.00.  Limit of 6.
 

3:00 Beginning Language for Seamstresses ­ Lady Alessandra Foscari (Michelle
Williamson) -For those beginning seamstresses who have little experience using patterns, we'll 
Explore using Basic patterns, basic terminology and technique will be discussed.  If class time allows, Some simple beginning patterns will be explained and walked through. Fee $3.00 for handout.



Track 3
10:00 Getting the Most Out of the Big 3 Patterns ­ Lady Muirgheal ui Ogain (Manly Summerfield)
­ A discussion for people new to garb or want to move on to something more involved but don't know where to start or aren't comfortable drafting patterns. We will look at patterns put out by the "Big Three" as well as Fantasy Fashions and Medieval Miscellanious. Tips on which to use and how to alter them to get the most out of them will be the focus of this basic class. Patterns will be available to view as will a few finished products.


11:00 Period Piracy: Bantiarna Meadh Inghean Thaidg ua Domnaill (Shannon Keys)   As long as there have been ships on the sea there have been pirates.  But most of our conception of piracy is post period.  This class looks at piracy in period, ranging from classical Greece to the Vikings, Muslim Corsairs through the Elizabethan Seadogs.  How did they operate?  Who were the preferred targets, and Who were the most feared?  Discussion from those gentles with pirate, or privateer personnas is welcomed and encouraged. 



1:00 Making Kid's Garb ­ Lady Yamanouchi Akiko (Brandi Gahrmann): Learn to make affordable and easy garb for your children that they will look perfectly period in.  Tips on choosing patterns and accessories that will have your children looking better than you in Garb.  There is no fee for
this class.  Children are welcome to attend.

2:00 Intro to the SCA ­ Lady Cecily De Stafford, (Gail Gray) ­ and Elizabeth - practical tips for getting started in the SCA. Tips on garb, feast gear, what you need for daytrips, camping, cabin events. Brief looks at choosing a name and persona. 

3:00 ­ Period Tokens and Favors ­ Bantiarna Meadh Inghean Thaidg ua Domnaill: (Shannon Keys)
  What types of tokens and favors were used in period?  What is the difference between a token or favor?  The answers to these questions, and many others is the focus of this class.  I will be providing ideas for alternatives to the "fingertip towel" belt favor that is so common in the SCA, as well as ideas for gentleman that wish to present their ladies with favors.

Track 4  ( in the hall or outdoors)
10:00-12:00 Cheap and Dirty Metal Coin Casting ­ Lord Derek of Connemara (David Hotelling)
 A demonstration of a one-sided mold metal casting using inexpensive tools  and materials,  which is suitable for making feast tokens (like those for Passage East  III), medallions and  favors.  (This technique can also be used to create jewelry and hard to  find embellishments  for garb, simply utilize lead-free silver solder).  The smokiest part of  the process will be done  before collegium,  and the class will be encouraged to participate.  A  two-sided cast will be attempted for your amazement!  Hand-outs will be  provided. $1.00.  Tokens will made and some distributed according to time. 

1:00 Organizing the Camp Kitchen ­ Nicodemus the Trader (Thumper)  How to organize, pack and run an efficient camp kitchen.


2:00 Intro to English Country Dance ­ Triska Victoria :Students will learn the basic figures of English Country Dance, and will learn how to combine them into commonly done dances such as Gathering Peascods, Jenny Plucked Pears and others. No experience necessary. ***Note - Requests gladly taken, please contact me prior to the class to request a dance.

3:00 Rapier 101 ­ The pointy end goes that way: THL Gunthar Drakenburg, (Wayne Han)  Come and learn about one of the fastest growing activities in the SCA. How do I know it's one of the fastest? I don't, but it sounds good! We will talk briefly about rapier history, and discuss how rapier fits into both SCA and mundane context. Follow the discussion, there will be a demonstration and lastly, basic rapier instruction for those willing! Come ready to learn and be dazzled! 




Track 5
10-:00 Packing for SCA Travel ­ Cyndra of the Loch (Cindy Woods) Event packing made easy.  Learn what you should use, how to condense what you have, how to best utilize space.all to make event more enjoyable and less trouble. 



11:00 Period Cooking- Nicodymus the Trader (Thumper), Learn the recipes and methods for preparing period dishes.  

2:00 Chain Mail  101­ Lord Sinclair Hawkins: (Trey Sutter) A hands-on class to teach you the art of making chain mail. Bring 2 pairs of pliers, one pair being needle nose.  

3:00 Landsknecht in a day:  Herr Melchior Graowulf (Kevin Baun) Every thing that you never wanted to know about the German Landsknecht. Will include an overview and history of the Landsknecht as well as basic information on garb, armaments, social structure and  daily life (beer.). 

Track 6

10:00 Bonsai. Lord Takeda Yoshina & Lord Torquil MacTaggart the Steadfast:  Learn how to cultivate living trees with the methods of this Japanese art form. 
 

11:00 Documentation & Presentation ­ Lady Adeliza of Bristol (Anna Maria Miller): Those two words scare off many gentles from entering the Arts & Science competitions. Learn exactly what the words mean, what judges are looking at while evaluating your entries, and what to included and what to leave out. It's really not as complicated as you think! Taking notes recommended.

1:00 Writing Award Letter:, Lord Takeda Yoshinaka: (Andrew Dutschke An overview of Kingdom & Nottinghill Coill Baronial Awards, and how to write a letter of recommendation. 

2:00  Service through the Arts & Sciences: ­ Lady Adeliza of Bristol  (Anna Maria Miller):: The many facets of the Arts and 
Sciences hold our fair Society together, and there is a constant need for the donations of artisans. This class will inform you of some ways to serve the dream by sharing your talents. We will discuss what type of items make good donations, what kind don't, and what is most needed. Taking notes recommended.

3:00 Japanese Poetry:  Lord Takeda Yoshinaka  (Andrew Dutschke,)The class will learn the different forms of Japanese Poetry. With examples from Period works

Track 7

11:00 SCA Courtesy, Baroness Rachel Wallace (Virginia Gray)  Aimed toward the SCAdian (or those who need a refresher), this class will cover how to recognize who's who, how to address them, and basic SCA courtesy while at events. No class limit, but must be pre-registered to ensure you get a handout. Cost 50 cents to cover handout.  Wallace, 

1:00 Marshaling ­ Lord Johann Von Rothenburg (John Gahrmann): The required course for both heavy and rapier marshals. Learn the rules and duties of the SCA marshall.

 3:00 Seignorialism Manorialsm and Feudalism, o my: Lord Torquil MacTaggart, the Steadfast) (Dusty Mullin), A discussion of different types of management in the Middle Ages. 



Track 8  For Kids 
10:00 Heraldry, Lady Glee (Deb Mullins) Come learn how to read heraldry. Design one for yourself.

 11:00 Engineering for Kids, Lord Torquil MacTaggart, the Steadfas0 (Dusty Mullins),  Learn how things work. Trip hammers, the waterwheel and the DaVinci lock.  Hands=on activity. 



12:00 Feast: Lady Glee (DebMullins), (provided)  What can a kid do for feast and make your own feast. 

 1:00 Stained Glass: Lady Glee (Deb Mullins) Make stained glass-type artwork t to take home with plastic and markers. 

 2:00 Bread making, Lady Glee, (Deb Mullins) Bake a loaf and food color your heraldry.

 3:00 How to be a Bard: Lady Glee (Deb Mullins) Performance and creativity with music, poetry and puppetry for kids.
