I agree that stability testing sounds hilarious at first blush. However...

The herald doing stability testing is doing it because she wanted to be able
to make definitive statements about which markers ought not be used. She
exposes the marked papers to a range of environmental conditions to see if
the colors shift. No one laid the burden on her; she perceived a need and
moved to fill it (in find SCA fashion).
