Greetings,
I don't normally address these kinds of things but sometimes someone says
something so outrageously stupid one has no choice. What "Alastair" sometimes
calls is to say the least an insult to everyone.
I have only been in the SCA for about 5 years now and I do see the politics
that goes along with it. If you don't belong to "the" household or serve a
certain knight then sometimes people are looked down upon. And sometimes
ridiculed for reasons beyond me. And I have heard "high" ranking people in
the SCA do it.
But, as for my self. If you don't like what I do, what household I belong to
or the way I play the game and live the dream (and that's just what it is, a
game and a dream) then you can keep your mouth shut and go gossip with your
so called "in" group.
And those that feel left out of the game can come to me and be welcome at my
fire any day.
I am not a big person in the SCA but I am a "bigger" person than some that
look down their noses towards others.
When its all said and done, when the tents and garb are packed away. The only
thing you have to do is go on with your mundane life and live it. Because if
some UN-chivalrous Butt-head thinks he is better than you, then he or she
should look in the mirror and then go get a real life.
So to all the pompous people (great and small) in the SCA, I beg you.
Remember that you were new at one time too and you were talked about too. And
if you remember, you probably didn't like it too much.
I guess it all boils down to this. Come to the events, enjoy yourself and
help others enjoy it too. It just might make your dream that much better. We
are all in it for the fun anyway.
And as to Alastair, I do not know you and do not mean to sound crass towards
you. I am sure you are a fine person, its just that sometimes we say things
we shouldn't and we know it. So please forgive me if I have offended thee.

ever in service to the dream,
Seamus
