I believe that heralds were plagued by unstable
pigments in the Period as well. Consider this passage from "The book of
fayttes of armes and of chyualrye", translated and printed by William Caxton in
1489.
That other coloure of armoyrie is grene that men
calle sinople or verte.
Outside of French heraldry, "sinople" refers to
the shade of *red* that you get from the red earth of Sinope in
Paphlagonia.

My curiosity is aroused...why
are colour printed submissions posing a
problem?
Because,Your Grace, the colours fade over
time. I have several colour
printouts in my mundane office, in which the red
has become pink and the blue
purple, almost lavender.
If someone were to come up with color printer
inks that did not fade, this
problem might be alleviated, but until then we
are stuck doing it by hand.
In fact, only certain brands of markers are
allowed for colouring, for the
same reason.
