[MR] Membership

Greetings!

The "Pay to Play" and "Pay to Fight" wars have been fought lo these many
years ago, back in the days of the reign of Antonius Provinus Emperatus
(That's during the experiment with Tony Provine in 1993? or thereabouts).

Skirmishes still erupt around the Known World from time to time. There are
deeply held convictions and strong opinions on both sides.

This kingdom has, to my knowledge, never been a "Pay to Play" Kingdom. That
is, we have never required membership to attend events.

We have been a "Pay to Fight" Kingdom, where we require membership to engage
in combat activities.

And soon we won't require membership for either activity.

The SCA's By-Laws require that Officers have paid membership and access to
the Kingdom Newsletter. This also applies to deputies designated as
successors to officers, or assigned independent administrative duties (like
Autocrats, who are deputies to the Seneschale).

Corpora requires membership for entry into Crown or Coronet lists, and that
membership be maintained throughout the reign.

The Laws of Atlantia require that "All Territorial Barons and Baronesses
must be paid members of the SCA for the duration of their tenure."

The merits of requiring the rest of us to have membership have been debated
on and off for years. There are valid points on all sides of the debate. I
don't know, however, if it's constructive to go through all that debate
again on the Merry Rose.

Regards!
