Master Efenwealt Wystle and Mistress Dervila ni Leanon proudly present
Love Will Return
the 12th century romance of Heloise and Abelard in story and song
This 75 minute production is based on the lives and letters of two
of the most well known romantic figures of the medieval period. Pierre
Abelard was a controversial scholar at Notre Dame. He fell hopelessly in
love with the brilliant and beautiful lady Heloise. There affair was torrid
and passionate. Paris rang with the love songs he composed for her.
Heloise's uncle, ashamed and dishonored by their illicit affair and
secret marriage, had Abelard attacked and emasculated in the night.
Believing this to be punishment directly from God, Abelard would have no
more to do with his lover. He took orders as a monk to atone for his sins
and asked Heloise to join a convent.
Years later, through many personal trials and strange twists of fate
the lovers were reunited in a very different way. Heloise was now abbess of
her convent and Abelard her abbot. Through their correspondences, they
rediscovered the love they'd once had and Abelard finally learned what
Heloise knew all along. Their love was much deeper, more spiritual and more
divine than he had ever imagined. They were sister and brother in spirit and
joined together through the love of God.
Their letters to one another were collected and reprinted during our
period and are still available today. They have been the subjects of poetry,
songs, movies and even a Broadway musical. Their grave is still regarded as
a pilgrimage shrine by lovers from all over the world.
Master Efenwealt is a singer/songwriter, instrumentalist, and
recording artist. Ever since writing the title song "Love Will Return" some
years ago he has longed to create a production that would give context to
the piece and tell the lovers' entire tale. In addition to his original
work, contemporary songs and works of Abelard will be featured between
segments of narrative performance by Mistress Dervila, story-teller
extrodinaire. Her style is dynamic and engaging, driven by dramatic
characterizations that truly pull the listener into a tale. Also featured
are the beautiful vocal talents of Lady Aénor d'Anjou, and Lady Ysolt La
Bretonne. Together they weave a magical tapestry of story and song,
transporting the audience into the world of our Dream.
