So what on earth were residents of religious houses doing wearing such
decoration anyway?

I'm reminded of the story my mother told of the dean of students of her (then
all-women's) college (late 1940's), who forbade the students to wear red
dresses at dances, and forbade the bands at said dances to play the tune
"Stardust", both of which were supposed to be arousing. And this lady had a
degree in psychology!

Bemusedly, Donal
