My Lords...

Combat safety is most certainly an meritable issue to discuss. However, it
seems that you good gentles have taken to snipping each other's heels over
what amounts simply to differing opinions. And if you think further on the
issue, your opinions do not differ to a large extent. You both feel that
safety is a concern which must be looked to. You both feel compassion for
those you are facing on the field.

If your methods differ, well, that is a personal matter. The truth is, SCA
combat is a sport in which people are going to get hurt at times no matter
how many precautions they might take. Leather straps will weaken and snap at
just the wrong time, weapons will by some freak of nature get caught in an
opponent's helm, arrows may get lodged in a face grill. And the funny thing
is, these things aren't necessarily caused by improper safety precautions...
sometimes, they just happen.

You both obviously wish to have more stringent precautions, and you each
have the opportunity to teach others your own methods for safety. Just
because it isn't a regulation doesn't mean you can't go ahead and DO it.
More power to you =)

In service,
