Personally, my household has a giant yurt, made in the most period design
possible, with the only exception being the fabric. I lieu of felt (which
we can't buy enough of with our budgets,) we found some DUCT-TAPE SILVER
CANVAS! The roof hole is covered by green tarp fabric. We've discovered
that the design is perfect, as the fabric can be hiked up to allow breeze to
blow through, or buttoned down quite tightly to be very warm. If you came
to Pennsic last year, you probably heard of it.
Personally, I have no problems with fabric that wasn't around, as it is
often much more economical to use modern stuff. If you can't find any
almost-as-cheap canvas or cotton, by all means do it with synthetics. As
for colour, try not to get anything offensive. Most people never have
issues with cloth that looks period, but if you have a green tarp covering
the entire tent with pink polyester bits sewn on, you will be flamed. The
silver was the best we could do, while still having something opaque.

Anyway, there ya go...
