Well, actually, those kingdoms where squires use silver chains are 
technically in violation of the Society-wide reservation of the chain and 
white belt to knights as the knightly chain is not restricted to gold in 
the registered blazon: "(Tinctureless ) A circular chain."
This was first registered formally back in 1982 by Wilhelm von Schlussel as 
a badge since that was the only heading then available.  It was reregisterd 
with this blazon as reserved regalia as recently as 1998 so there can be no 
doubt that the reservation in all tinctures of chain is still current.
