Pax in Nomeni Domini!
Unto Havordh Aettarbani, by the grace of God, Knight,
and lately King of Atlantia, does Guilliem Michel de
Byram, Brother Sergeant of the Atlantian Preceptory of
the Temple of Jerusalem send joyous greetings and
wishes for good health and prosperity, so may it
please God. Amen.
Noble King,
I put ink to page on this, the Thursday of Our Lords
Passion, to address certain notes of correspondence
addressed to noble and gentle lords of your realm that
have been routed by way of messengers passing the
Preceptory. Namely, missives concerning a certain
conflict to take place in your Baronial Lands of Caer
Mear on the 12th day of May.
It has come our attention that a certain Knight of
Your realm has offered services for mercenary hire
within the boundaries of Your own lands, and even
against Your vassal unto who it is entrusted. And
while this Baron is not yet a Christian, it is certain
that his soul could be achieved for God, at some later
date. For truly his ancestors embraced our faith for
nothing more than a good linen shirt, and we are yet
confident that such a bargain can be made. As to his
body and property, they are rightly Yours to dispose
of as Your will dictates, knowing that the just King
rewards those subjects that faithfully conduct his
will.
Certainly then, this conflict must be against Your
will, as we are sure that peace and fellowship within
Your realm are Your chief aim, for as it is written,
let there be no dissension within them. It is, of
course, the Temples main concern as well, that this
conflict be avoided so that Christian knights need not
shed the blood of one another, regardless of the fact
that this conflict has its roots between two infidels.
But should that peaceful settlement not be reached,
let it be known that we offer good fortune to You and
Your man in all endeavors martial. For it is the duty
of the third estate to ensure the protection of the
first two, that being the priesthood and villainy.
Therefore, we are taken with great wonder that You
have not yet sent the cry to all Your able bodied men
to put down this rebellion and make peace within Your
lands, offering aid in coin and arms to that end. We
believe that this is not a sin of lack of charity,
rather, knowing that often a new monarch is beset with
costs from the expense of his coronation, and that
those same costs can impair his ability to properly
reward and retain his vavasours, believe that poverty
has stated Your royal hand. For why else would good
Christian Knight be tempted to a life of hired pay if
not that his surezien be niggardly? Surely there is
the cause for this predicament. For by what other
reason would a Knight of your realm offer to turn his
hand against a fellow servant of the King? We find
these affairs most shameful, and beg that you address
them directly.
Therefore, we poor servants of God, namely the Temple,
offer what help he may in this Your time of crisis. If
moneys be needed to arm and keep your nobles as befits
Your grace, let them be drawn from the Temple, with
such a small consideration of say, 15% interest,
resting assured that these moneys, not coming from the
hands of base moneylenders, will not incur the sin of
Simony. In exchange, we humble servants of Christ
offer to hold such valuables as your crown or other
affects, that which, now that your coronation day has
pasted, You are not in need of. Certainly, such
profitable transactions have occurred in the past
betwixt the sovereign powers of this world and the
Poor Knights of Christ. We stand then, at your
disposal, should you require our aid.
We are also told that it is certain the Duke Cuan will
travel to distant lands that very day, and there will
recover a certain dowry promised him. If indeed, You
feel the concern to accompany Your vassal in this
endeavor, even taking other such knights of prowess
with You in train, you must, in all good conscience
send notes charging your remaining vassals to hasten
in defense of Your lands. In all things a monarch must
be prudent, and surely vigilance is the price required
for greatness.
Therefore, let all your remaining subjects rally to
the cry for aid from Caer Mear, trusting that in the
numbers of true supporters of the Crown, they may rest
assured of victory over infidels that would mock and
threaten a sovereign kingdom.
Let your available knights, sergeants, and squires
join the cause of Your servant, for we see in this
dispute a most noble and just cause. Call your fiercer
subjects to the field against these infidels, that
Your people of the first two estates may continue to
know the peace and prosperity afforded them in the
days of Your predecessors. And that fearing God and
honoring the King, they may be afforded the riches
given for true service. Amen.
Done by our hand this 12th Day of April, sitting in
the house of the Lord,
Guilliem Michel de Byram
