Noble Friends, Especially Fellow Archers,

This day marks the date in 1568 when Roger
Ascham entered his final illness, likely malaria, leading
to his death on 30 December. Ascham was the foremost Greek and
Latin scholar in England, and served as tutor to Princess
Elizabeth Tudor in 1548. He held that position he held for two
years. He later served Queen Mary I as Latin secretary.

Roger Ascham is best known for his book TOXOPHILUS, the first
English-language work on archery. Ascham was a noted longbow
archer, and the books is both a training manual and a promotion of
the art of archery.

Here is a brief Wikipedia article about Roger Ascham:

The text of TOXOPHILUS is available free online. It is something
of a slog to read, but provides a great deal of historical
information: https://www.archerylibrary.com/books/toxophilus/ .
