This is one of those times…. I have now been approached on two separate occasions about MiT conduct on the range, and I also witnessed it myself at a recent event. I want to make it very clear I will not tolerate warranted marshals breaking the rules for MiT’s and I suspect on these occasions it was lack of understanding on the MIC’s part. I want to pass along a reminder about our MiT’s and how we evaluate them on their journey to becoming a warranted marshal:<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoListParagraph style='text-indent:-.25in'>1.<span style='font-size:7.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'> </span>The MiT MUST be present and participate in 3 separate events as a helping MiT. We ask that two of those events be outside the MiT’s local group. Pennsic does count. What I mean by “participate” is that they are there from the start to the finish helping with setup, inspection, the line and teardown. I have been informed and witnessed MiT’s strolling up and working for an hour while things were running and getting a signature from the MIC of archery for that day. This is unacceptable and frankly not fair to those that are putting in an effort! I don’t need to remind everyone that we are the most dangerous martial activity in the SCA and we all need to take it seriously. If there are problems with a MiT later, I will hold the sponsor marshal responsible as this was the push to have a sponsor that will attest and sign off that the MiT was ready to be warranted. Please take your role as sponsor and to our MIC’s for the day, seriously. If I continue to get reports like this I will investigate and take action if necessary.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoListParagraph style='text-indent:-.25in'>2.<span style='font-size:7.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'> </span>For the sponsors of MiT’s, before sending me their paperwork (yes it is YOUR job as sponsor to send me their paperwork, not theirs….) make sure their comments are supportive and you feel they are ready to proceed. We are not simply just handing out warrants and I find it interesting that in the 2 years I have been DEM, I have yet to see a MiT that needed a bit more time. This alarms me! Also you as the sponsor should be administering the test to the MiT to assure they know and understand our rules. They should be getting 80% or better on the test as it is based on our rules.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>If anyone has any questions, please feel free to let me know. I will be monitoring this issue very closely and hope it is behind us. I would also like to see our regional marshals take a closer look at things that are happening in their areas of responsibility.
