A year or so ago, someone (if memory serves it was Nuala and Geoffrey?) brought a bunch of Atlatls to a Dun Carraig event, several people tried them out for the first time that day, myself included. It was an absolute blast! As a group the furthest we could get them to go was 45~50 yards, at about 30 yards we could pepper the area around the target, and at about 15 yards 1 in 3 shoots would hit. Less then that really didn't seem worth it given the length of the atlatl arrows. Our "target" was a rotten stump that was 2.5' ~3' diameter, standing about 18" high.<br>
<br>Given that any new comer to an shooting activity wants it to be fun, but still be at least somewhat near hitting the target, and if the mundane clubs are averageing around a 100cm target, a 60cm target seems way to small, given it would be just as easy to order a 80cm or a 120cm FITA target. As a beginner myself but able to see where the skill can go, I'd be inclined to recommend using the 120cm, but count all ten rings, and throw from 10, 20, and 30 yards. This would be big enough that at the closer ranges the new comers would certainly get points, and likely get a few points at 30. Yet by using all 10 rings, still competitive as the skills get better. <br>
<br>If you had 3 throws from each range, 9 throws total, the perfect score would be 90. If each of the current 6 Atlatl ranks where worth 15 points it would come out to a perfect 90 as well. <br><br>Just throwing it out there, what do some of the current Atlatl'ists say?<br>

<p>My research has uncovered the distances at which they throw and the number of darts at each distance vary somewhat by club. The closest is<u></u><u></u></p>
<p>6 meters and the furthest is 25 meters. The total number of darts in an official round appears to be 10, either two stations of 5 darts each, or<u></u><u></u></p>
<p>5 stations with 2 darts each.<u></u><u></u></p>

<p>The current Atlantian throwing distances are 20, 30 and 40 yards. Since we in the SCA try to have fun, anything past 20 yards for a 60sm target does not meet that standard.<u></u><u></u></p>
