Archers, We've read too many emails about bow types and attitudes. So here is another one. We just had a very fine royal archery championship, or whatever they are calling it these days. Thanks to something like 60 or 70 archers who are either my friends or I haven't met you yet we had a wonderful event to enjoy. My experience during the past 8 years in Atlantian archery is that it takes a lot of us to make the game fun for all of us. And each of us is free to play the game as we want to play it. Any persona, any bow type, any level of skill, any age, gender, etc is fine as long as you can connect it to the middle ages with some thread of reality. So we all chose to be different in many many ways. And we chose to play with many different
goals. Then we do the best we can with what we've got. Some of us are older, younger, wiser, prettier, stronger, bigger, crazier, smarter, more experienced, injured, whatever. So my point is that there are no circumstances where two archers will be perfectly evenly matched when they step up to the line. One got more sleep the night before, another pulls a heaver or faster bow that shoots flatter. One is too excited to think straight and the other is too tired to shoot straight.

I personally think crossbows are more precise than my longbow and my period bow. Heck, my long bow is more precise than my period bow. So if precision was my thing, I would shoot a crossbow. But it is not. Neither is maximizing the precision of hand bows. If it was, I would shoot a compound bow like most of the archers that come to our practice range or I would shoot an olympic style
recurve. But that's not the game I want to play. And it seems neither do any other SCA archers. I want to play in the SCA. I want to see what I can achieve with the bows I have and the arrows I cobble together in my dream of the middle ages with sun screen.

I was tickled pink to see Miles win last year with a recurve bow and tickled again to see Mors win this year. Two years, two bow types. Cool. Both Myles and Mors worked really hard for several years to achieve their victories. Vivat.

So I would really like us all to enjoy playing with the bow of our choice and if your bow does not satisfy you, try to get one that will help you pursue your own goal.

In the mean time, lets remember that we are playing to have fun and having fun depends on us all helping each other have fun and every one is free to shoot the bow of their
choice.

Timothy of Shaftesbury and Roshu

From: "archers-request@seahorse.atlantia.sca.org" <archers-request@seahorse.atlantia.sca.org>
To: archers@seahorse.atlantia.sca.org
Sent: Mon, June 20, 2011 3:01:25 PM
Subject: Archers Digest, Vol 93, Issue 22
