color:blue'>All on this list, this thread brings up old thoughts and some hard
feelings for me. However, without getting into embarassing details let me
just say that from my point of view the solution to this entire issue is
QUALITY OF MARSHAL. We have had situations in the past that resulted in
either dangerous situations, stupid rules, or embarassment for the archery
community due, again in my opinion, to bad marshalling. If Atlantian
archery marshals are of quality and fully understand that being an event TA MIC
means you are the SAFETY OFFICER and not God for a Day, then these situations
would not come up. Good marshals contact the event autocrat BEFORE the
event to discuss archery needs. Kaytarzyna says she has driven hours to
investigate a new to her site. That's the type of quality marshalling I'm
referring to. Setting targets in areas without consideration of the
overshoot zones is not quality marshalling. No matter how many rules we
write we will NEVER be able to write a rule to prevent stupid or poor quality.<span

the case, at least today in Atlantia. The incidents I keep referring to as
evidence occurred because of two factors, 1. Autocrat “shoe-horned”
archery into places it was unsafe and should have not been. 2. The MIC, even
though I know they meant well did not understand the safety rules and even made
a comment to me when I challenged the range setup that, “The Baron said
it was alright.” One ended up alright after we adjusted the range to be
safe, the other someone almost got shot. If I had my way I would have pulled
those warrant’s immediately and asked that those two marshall’s
have someone assigned to them to help them get up to speed. Both are still
current marshal’s in Atlantia.

Lady Kaytarzyna,

Are you suggesting that at a tournament we marshals, as participating archers,
should refuse to shoot? Absolutely! But even more than that, the
marshal-in-charge MUST refuse to set up and open a range on a space that does not
meet kingdom safety standards. Period. Not to do so would endanger the MIC's
warrant, and in case of an accident, would open the Kingdom (not to mention the
MIC) up to all sorts of Society sanctions and possible legal troubles.

Closing the range would undoubtedly cause a lot of hard feelings, a blizzard of
emails, probably not be taken seriously by the powers that be (outside of the
archery community), and possibly cause archery to be excluded at that event in
the future, but it is the only possible course of action.

Kind regards,

agree that the TA Marshall in Charge needs to communicate with the Autocrat as
to the needs for a suitable site for archery. I think one of the
biggest problems is that people like to "stretch" the rule in
order to be able to accommodate a shoot. Let's face it archery on
site means more money. I think each of us as Atlantia Marshalls should
refuse to shoot a range that is not suitable and ask for a refund.
