Noble Friends, Especially Crossbow Archers,

This morning while wandering through Wikipedia in search of something upon
which to comment upon over on the Merry Rose, I stumbled upon this very
interesting painting:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/be/Anbetung_der_Könige_%28Bruegel%2C_1564%29_–_cropped.jpg
<https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/be/Anbetung_der_K%C3%B6nige_%28Bruegel%2C_1564%29_%E2%80%93_cropped.jpg>
. It is possible to blow this image up to a large size for careful study.

The painting is an atypical take on the Adoration of the Magi by Peter
Bruegel the Elder from 1564. Keeping in mind that the artist probably used
models wearing the clothing and accessories of the time, this painting is
valuable for SCA mid-16th century costuming and weaponry purposes.

The crossbowman in the upper left of the composition is of special interest
to us. His crossbow, crank mechanism and bolts in his belt are shown in
great detail. Note that one of his bolts is rather oddly stuck in his hat.

Also note the very interesting collection of pole weapons, again shown in
great detail. The pop-eyed soldier next to the crossbowman also merits
attention. His helm, mail and coat may also be of interest to us. Another
soldier wears a kettle helmet.

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Archer of Mallard Lodge 🦆
