[Archers] Archers Digest, Vol 172, Issue 1

As having been part of the group that started SAAD it saddens me that it is moving to every other year. My personal hope was that SAAD would spawn other archery centric events. As a former Trimarian and lurking on their archery list I like to think I was able to nudge them to create TAD. Then we had MAAD. I was ever hopeful that a NAAD would come to being as well. With all of these archery centric events my ultimate hope was that at some point there would be a KWAD. Those I discussed the idea with were all in favor and thought it a fantastic idea/event. But now we find SAAD every other year, MAAD gone by the way side, hope for a NAAD and TAD happens a bit spotty - some years yes, some no.
But I think there is a much larger issue here that is causing this and not being discussed nor dealt with. I have MIC'd about half of the SAADs. Last year was the first year I was able to actually shoot the entire event! But what I hear from those who have "helped" is that SAAD is a lot of work. Well duh! Some 28 shooting stations, some with multiple targets, about 100 archers, yes, SAAD or any event like SAAD is a lot of work. My thought was if people left SAAD saying "That was a GREAT event! I'm definitely going to put it on my schedule for next year!". Then I did my job. All the work was worth it. For SAAD I was in a special situation. I lived about 30 minutes from site. I had 3 out buildings on my property that were filled with target making materials. I was, and still seem to be, unable to drive down the road, see a foam cooler in the ditch, and NOT think "That would make an archery target". I was constantly collecting target materials. For SAAD I could take the wood's walk targets out one day then the field targets the next day while I set the wood's walk. Setting the field targets was always dependent upon when the field was mowed......... After SAAD I went back during the following week to retrieve the targets. I worked for me because I work out of my home and I lived close. But the main issue was I was willing to do the work to make a great event.
Therein lies the main problem as I see it, lack of people willing to actually do the work to run an event. Not just an archery centric event by any event. Mistress Lorelei had to cancel Of The Stone event due to lack of people willing to step up to staff the event. Some who helped me with SAADs said after the event, "That was a lot of work and I'm never doing that again!". So what does this mean? Does it mean that we have been slackers in training adequate and capable understudies to take our places or at least share in the burden? If too many have the attitude that they want to attend an event but not help to run it soon there will be NO events to attend!
These are my two cents worth and considering I now live in Meridies but still care about my Atlantian arher community, you may do with these ideas as you see fit.
