November 18th is the traditional day that William Tell shot the apple 
with his son's head: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Tell . William 
Tell was a real person, but much of his fame can be traced only to a 
late 15th century book, and to a later 16th century retelling. How much 
of Tell's story is fact, and how much is invention, is open to some 
debate (think George Washington and the cherry tree). The core events 
are probably true. It makes a great story, and has, as they say, 
"truthiness".
