I believe that Otto had said something about this at Unevent, basically a
separate qualification for MIC's.  Janyn and I both thought it would be a
good idea and is something that would benefit the Kingdom.

 

As a marshal, I have attended the Armored 101, Armored 201, Siege 101 and of
course Archery 101 and Combat Archery 101 classes. 

Having a working knowledge of all SCA marshal activities will just makes us
a better marshal and should be required for MIC.

 

I sent Gaston, the MIC at Yimr, a polite message suggesting that he read the
rules for all marshal activities and included the link to the Archery
Handbook as a bonus.

OK a proposal/subject I brought up to Janyn privately but do here now in the
hopes that our numbers, and those among us with more horsepower in this
club, may actually get implemented.  I suggest 2 levels of marshal warrant.
Level 1 is a warrant in one activity be it heavy, rapier or archery,
whatever else.  Level 2 is a warrant in an activity BUT the individual has
attended marshal classes for heavy, equestrian and archery.  These 3 as
heavy would include specifics for rapier.  Archery as it would include
thrown weapons.  And equestrian just 'cuz they are so different.  A level 2
warrant would mean that individual is at least familiar with the specific
needs of all activities that may occur at an event.  Therefore only a level
2 warranted individual could MIC an event.  Yes, it adds a layer to the
marshal program.  And yes, not everyone will want to go through the process.
But it would get rid of these marshals with 15 years MIC experience who no
nothing about anything that does not occur on the heavy battle field.  And
in my opinion ANY MIC of this nature is a major liability in and of
themselves!

40+ paying slots is a big block to disinfranchise. 

If he's such an experienced MIC, as he claims, he damn well SHOULD be
experienced with the archery community by now. 

Marshall-In-Charge means just that, you are in charge and the buck stops at
you if anyone has an issue and you had BETTER have answers about any
marshall activity at the event you are in charge of. Relying so heavily on
the marshalls that you won't have an activity because you don't trust many
people to run them is a problem in your supervisory skills. MIC's don't have
to know everything but they should know a lot.

Telling the Kingdom DEM, no thank you I don't trust you or anyone you may
suggest to me to run an archery range either, is a problem.
