[Archers] Alternatives to Alice

Let me just weigh in here. Although the Pennsic masters shoot has had
themes like Princess Bride, Snow White and her short friends and others of
the same ilk in the past, they were, at best, marginally period. HOWEVER,
the very first ever SAAD was Bubba themed (and we still hear "where's
Bubba") mostly because it was the SOIUTHERN Atlantian Archery Day. So folks
shot out of the back of pickups, at road signs, and staff wore camouflage.
But we have NEVER heard the end of it. Comments like "SAAD wasn't/isn't a
REAL SCA event". Not quite sure what that meant but I'm guessing those who
don't shoot archery but had the most to say, read here criticize, SAAD
didn't get the FUN of the event. And so, every SAAD since has NOT been
Bubba themed, except this year's, but Bubba has been at least one shooting
station.

Side note: I've been told by those who would know that Bubba is an valid
old Polish name for grandmother. This year's SAAD theme will be Bubba
visits Scotland and we all know Scotland is period!

My point is a more period styled theme may be a better choice as Nuala
suggests. There are a great many subjects. I'm on a list of Michigan
reenactment archers who put on a shoot last summer using period themes.
Seemed like some great targets to shoot and interesting much like we have
come to expect in/from Atlantia.

As there is plenty of time, perhaps a re-think may be in order.

I have to agree with Nuala...why not choose something period...there is so
much to choose from!

Greetings, all.

I haven't been on the lists much but this caught my eye. I did a 15-station
shoot on Alice in Wonderland two years ago for the Barony of Storvik's
Birthday and Investiture. At the time I thought it would be a fun theme that
at least had chess sets and a queen in it, so what the hell. It was a blast
to think up all the targets, and we had a great day on the range, but I took
a ton of flack for the theme and the fact that it is not medieval in the
least. I have learned a lot since then and have realized that there are so
many wonderful shoot ideas that ARE medieval - - at least in their imagery -
- that there's no real reason to pull from popular culture or out-of-period
places. I would never choose to do another shoot on a modern theme, myself.
Two years ago Jonathas (and his wife!) put on a kingdom archery shoot based
on Gaston Phebes Book of the Hunt which was just spectacular, just gorgeous.
I know the East did a Star Trek Champions shoot year before last, but I
think Atlantia can make this shoot a great one while respecting the fact
that we are all actors in a drama that is supposed to take place in 600 -
1600, Europe. Last year before St. Sebastian's I put about a dozen ideas out
on the list and Lorelei liked medieval monsters, which I think ended up
being a nice shoot theme from which everyone could come up with their own
angle/artwork. I just want to encourage you all to take one little step back
and consider picking a theme that is in fact related to the era we are
supposedly reenacting.

Just my two cents. If you do Alice, I have targets. And I'll be there anyhow
no what is chosen.

But if you want other theme ideas . . .

medieval monsters

colorful heraldry

medieval night sky

king arthur

robin hood (I like this one)

life on a viking ship

the plague

small creatures, big plants

beowulf

the Book of Kells

robbers and theives vs the quiet village in France

the hundred years war

castles, moats, and dragons

things that fly or go bump in the night

...

Nuala

Hello everyone, just wanted to send an update to the planning for this
year's shoot. As most of you already have seen, our list of volunteers
continues to grow as we move forward. I am working on prizes for the winners
and all helping Marshal's of the shoot. I have contacted Lord Godric of the
East Kingdom to try to secure the date and day so that Countess Rowan can
start spreading the word as early as possible. Also I know Christophe of
Grey has volunteered to get the announcements into the Pennsic Independent
as well. As we get closer to Pennsic, we can finalize our list of Marshal's
and targets. It looks like we are going with the theme of "Alice in
Wonderland" so we will need to coordinate target faces for all targets being
offered for the shoot. THL Seamus has agreed to help me with the scorecards
so they can actually be read this year, Lol..

So, looks like things are shaping up. I want to thank everyone for the help
and offers to help. It is you that made this successful last year and will
make it even better this year!

Talk with you soon..
