I must respectfully disagree on this generalization; there are
different varieties of 'cane' and the one I have used is the native
Southeastern river cane. It is nearly though not quite as hard as
bamboo and is far easier to straighten using heat. There is also an
invasive cane species, Arundo donax, that is far softer and less
suitable though some still do use it.
