[Archers] Archers Digest, Vol 42, Issue 4

Evening Good Gentles,

I agree with Siegfried that we do not need another rank. For us to
officially describe one of our fine archers as ludicrous well just seems
ludicrous. I have no problem with any good gentle further the mastery of
his/her craft but I think that the rank of grand bowman elite is enough
official recognition for anyone. Besides, the unoffical tradition is much
better and adds to the lore and fun of the Society. I have no problem with
an unofficial rank being posted on the web page either in its current format
or as link.

To his excellency, Baron Jonathas, I would simply like to say thank you for
all your hard work on our database and I find no offense with anything you
have done in your service to Atlantia's archey community.

Thank you all for your time and may you all have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Miles de Locwode

Greetings unto the archery marshals of Atlantia, please allow me to set
a few facts straight in regards to the Ludicrous Rank, and Gregge's
query ...

1) First of all, there was no conspiracy behind/between Jonathas and I,
to make that extra rank in the system, and to make it show up special,
because I happened to be the one who achieved it.

Instead, Baron Jonathas who made this excellent system for us, was
approached a while back by the Kingdom of AEthlemearc, to retool the
same system for them to use, since they saw how wonderful it was.

When doing that, they asked if it could show the Ludicrous unofficial
rank separately on the pages, as they felt that would be desired.

Baron Jonathas made those changes for their version, and went ahead and
included them into our version of the software as well, as he saw no
harm in doing so. And I most certainly do not fault him for that
assumption. There was a mention in passing once from him, a year or
more ago, that there was something 'special' in place for folks who hit
Ludicrous. I did not know exactly what it was, nor did I bother to
inquire further.

All of the input I have gotten on the matter since, will be taken into
account. Thank you all for your comments.

However:

2) There will not (at least as long as I am Kingdom Marshal) ever be an
'official rank' of Ludicrous. I do not wish that to happen. In the SCA
the rank of Ludicrous has a long tradition of being an unofficial rank,
that archers across the SCA support and understand. There is strong
opposition in the SCA archery community against any Kingdom making an
official rank of Ludicrous. One kingdom did it once, and received so
many complaints from the rest of the SCA, that it was made back into an
unofficial rank.

I firmly support the fact that this is a community-based unofficial
rank, and the tradition that goes with it. I would not want to see
Atlantia make it official.

So that bit, will not be changing.

Siegfried

Well spoken and thank you, Siegfried.

Wow, all I have to ask all of you is this... what happened to the day when
archery in the SCA was fun? Before we all got lost in titles and ranks? I
personally remember when we all followed traditions and were content with
the light-hearted friendly competitions. I personally do not see where
displaying an unofficial rank on an official web site could or would pose
any problems in the future as long as it is stated as such (and with paisley
it certainly is).

Remember why we all shoot and play this game. I don't mean to say it
critically, just trying to get people to remember and think why we are all
here.

Greetings,

I am in search of Tor Olafsson from Ritterwald or someone who lives in his
area. I have his prize for the recent Seasonal Challenge.

Many Thanks
Jonathas

A hardy VIVOT to that!

I am truly sorry for causing this mess. I added the Easter Egg (in
programming terms) to our site when I started working with Aethelmearc on
their site, as they have a couple Ludicrous Bowmen they *wanted* it. I
thought it would be a fun little surprise to the first person in our fair
kingdom to break into that very elite rank. At the time I began working on
it I figured it would be Mika or Reynard who would get there, I only hinted
to Siegfried that there was something there when it looked like he might be
the lucky one.

Remember the ranks are supposed to make archery fun, to give each person
something to strive to achieve, and the Ludicrous rank is *supposed* to be
silly and, well? Ludicrous.

Relax, have fun, and go shoot something!

In Service,
Jonathas
