[Archers] Scores

Hello Again,

First, I agree that turning in more than three scores per weapon per practice or
event will not help the average. But entering more than three were discussed
prior to the new database going live and at that time It was answered as not
being a concern. Well, it looks as if the concern has changed or we would not be
having this conversation.

Second, I do not agree that space is not or will not be a problem on the server
if we are allowed to keep an unlimited number of scores on the active as well as
the expired list. For example, if an archer attends all of Lochmere's practices
on Thursdays and turns in just the 3 scores, that archer could accumulate
approximately 90 scores, and if they attend the Sunday Lochmere practice and
some other Barony practices and events with RR's , who knows what number of
scores could be obtained. I've worked in the computer world for over 30 years
and dasd/space/disk whatever you want to call it has or will be a concern at
some point. Since, we remove a score that is over a year old, we do limit the
number of scores that are on the current list by how many scores an archer can
shoot in a two year period. Since, we have not gone through a complete year
yet, I do not know if there is a limit already built in on the expired list. I
would hope so. Also, as those in the computer arena should know that the larger
the database becomes, the slower the response time may become and the harder it
may be to maintain.

Third, It was stated that it would have been nice to have seen our scores over
the past years, so that you could see an archers progress , etc. Knowing what
my scores were since I've started in the SCA or having them posted, serves me no
purpose. I shot them, I know what I shot and I need no reminder. Since, the
rules are being changed and when the Draft has been accepted, the issue of
highest rank achieved is no longer an issue. So again what good are posting
expired scores? They will not be needed to keep track of the highest ranking?
And for those that are interested in an archers progress, their highest ranking
and current scores will or should give you that picture. How am I doing Today,
not how I did yesterday should be the important point!

Fourth, Jonathas is going to have to say what the limitations are for the
database. I gave a suggestion on how the scores could be handled. He will have
to say whether it's even feasible to program the suggestion if the idea is
acceptable. No one said that keeping track of scores would not entail some
work on somebody's part. The new system spreads it out over many and not the one
as it has been in the past. This is good. And we should continue to try and
improve the process so that it contains the necessary information we need to see
and to make it as user friendly as possible.

Fifth, I know it was in jest, and I wouldn't want the rest of the community to
get the wrong idea. I can't speak for Gregge, but my laughing or chuckling at
scores I reserve for my own. As you can see by my scores I can shoot in the
40's and 50's as well as anyone else. And have even gone lower on occasion.
If I laugh or chuckle at anyone, it won't be at how they performed with a
recurve or longbow. Crossbowmen on the other hand I give no slack and will
harass accordingly on the field. :)
