Activity Description:

BARDIC
The Barony of Lochmere is pleased to invite one and all to Night on the Line Virtual Bardic Circle. This will be hosted on Zoom Saturday night, April 22, 2021 from 8 pm - midnight. This will be an open bardic, but we do issue forth the following challenge to the bards of Atlantia:

The Spooky Story Challenge: Bring your words and music to elicit the creepy, the crawlies, the chills, the things that go bump in the Night on the Line!

The Silly Poem Challenge: Who will be crowned the Night’s most RIDICULOUSLY lyrical Atlantian? Bring us poems to summon laughter or groans. No pun too bad, no situation too improbable, no jest too jocular, we welcome them one and all!

We encourage bards to begin with any pieces suitable for the challenges. This will be pick/pass/play, and we ask that all minors (under 18) have an adult with them in the room

SCAVENGER HUNT
Her Excellency will be hosting a timed scavenger hunt throughout the day. Get ready to join the quest from your home; see who can find an item the fastest!
PERIOD FIRE MAKING COMPETITION
Fire may no longer be the everyday necessity it once was, but practicing period fire making methods is an immersive (and fun!) way to learn more about those whose lives depended on it. Show off your skills by racing to light a candle using period methods in a competition sponsored by the Kingdom of Atlantia Royal Forestry Guild.
What do I need to participate?
In order to compete, you need (see below for details):
1. A device that can support Zoom (audio and video)
2. A period fire making kit
3. A candle (preferably beeswax) that has not been previously lit
This competition will take place live over Zoom, so participants must have a device (computer or smartphone) with a camera and a microphone. Zoom can be run as an app or from a browser.
Participants may use percussion (flint and steel) or friction (hand/bow drill, fire plow, etc.) methods to start a fire, and there will be two separate competitions for the two categories. Solar fire making methods are not recommended due to the impact of weather conditions, but if participants want to use a solar method, they will compete in the flint and steel group.
The use of charred cloth1 and touchwood1, 2 (processed tinder fungus or amadou) as tinder are documentable prior to 1600 CE, so may be used, but other tinder materials that can be gathered from natural environments and minimally processed may also be used, including but not limited to chaga, charred punkwood, and charred cattail fluff*. Tinder bundle materials may consist of hemp or linen tow, jute, and/or materials that can be gathered from natural environments, including but not limited to cedar bark, dry grass, pine needles, birch bark, and cattail fluff. Tinder and tinder bundle materials may be prepared prior to the competition. Sulfur matches, while used prior to 1600 CE3, 4, may not be used.
The goal of the competition is to light a candle, so participants will need a candle! Beeswax is preferred, and participants may find a taper candle easiest to use. The candle should be new (no charring on the wick). A candleholder may also be used.
How do I sign up?
If you would like to participate in this competition, please send an email to the Kingdom of Atlantia Royal Forestry Guild at atlantiaforesters at gmail.com<mailto:atlantiaforesters at gmail.com>. Be sure to include your SCA name and which fire making method you intend to use. Note: this competition will be streamed and/or recorded and uploaded to YouTube. By participating, you are agreeing to your video being used in this way.

How will this work?
Participants will log into the Zoom meeting shortly before the competition to test audio and video quality. After technical checks have been completed, each participant will show and describe their tools, materials, and preparations. This will both ensure that all participants are using acceptable kits and (more importantly) allow for everyone to share their knowledge and learn from each other! Documentation is highly encouraged, but not required.
After the show-and-tell portion, the competition will start with a countdown, and all participants will try to light their candle the fastest! All parts of the fire making process should be performed in view of the camera, and while the first participant to light their candle will be the winner, participants may continue to work until their candle is lit.

Passcode: L1tCandle
What do I get if I win?
Other than bragging rights, the winners of the percussion and friction contests will receive a prize if they live in the United States. Unfortunately, participants outside of the United States will not be able to receive a prize due to the cost of international shipping, but are encouraged to compete for bragging rights and admiration!
If there is only one participant in either contest, the participant will be asked to demo the process by which they make fire, explaining as they go (rather than going through the process as quickly as they can). In recognition of their competitive spirit and willingness to share their knowledge, they will receive the prize for their contest if they live in the United States.
Winners will be contacted after the competition about shipping addresses.

  * Fire making comes with inherent risk, and those risks can increase when gathering natural material for use as tinder or in a tinder bundle. Only utilize materials that you can identify and know are safe to use, especially when it comes to fungi!

CASTLE BUILDING
Children’s Activity: Where can you find castles? When were they built? What are the parts of a castle? Instructions for children to build their own castles will be posted on the FB Event Page and the Lochmere website. Competition ages: 4-8, 9-12 and 12-17. Join Lady Katla to find out more and see the submissions from the children.
VIRTUAL SWORD YOGA

As the plague loosens its grip on Smeewick, hope is blossoming amongst the townsfolk. The rapier contingent is hosting a dispersed virtual gathering to focus on slow drilling, mobility, and flexibily in preparation for the future return to training. These exercises combine slow holding and breathing focus commonly seen in yoga with rapier centric positions. No equipment is needed and people of all experience and physically are welcome to join.
