*Greetings and Well wishes unto all the Poets, Lyricists, Orators and
Wordsmiths in this, the fairest of all Kingdoms, Atlantia-*

This year at the Kingdom Arts and Sciences Festival there shall once again
be held THE Duke Gyrth Oldcastle Memorial Poetry Smackdown, this one being
the eighth such annual event.

‘WHAT, PRAYTELL, IS A POETRY SMACKDOWN?’ I sense you asking . . .
I’m glad you asked.

The smackdown serves as an opportunity for poets of all experience levels
to come and display their wordsmithing prowess in front of others in the
spirit of good fun. This is not a competition, though each entrant shall
be given a token to give to their favorite entry. And yes, occasionally
some of the poets use this opportunity to . . . . make statements about
each other. But that is by no means a requirement this year.

Entrants are asked to write the poems beforehand (this year there are two
(2) poems required) and to either show up at the KASF to read their poems
or to send them along with someone to read or to send them to me (the
moderator of this year’s smack down) and I shall arrange to have them read.

This year, in the hopes of attracting many poets to the competition, the
entry requirements are very flexible. Here is what any aspiring poet must
write to enter-

1) Entry fee poem- In honor of a great person and poet (Duke Gyrth
Oldcastle) you must write a poem, in any period style, that praises someone
in your life that inspires you (your lord, your lady, your pet parakeet,
whatever). OR, alternately, you can write a poem on any topic that is in
the style and form of an Elizabethan sonnet (one of Gyrth’s favored styles).
2) A smackdown poem. This must be a poem, in any period style, that
smacks down either a period archetype/profession or a scadian
archetype/profession. This can be an incredibly general archetype (i.e.
French people) a more specific archetype (i.e. fishmongers, laurels, people
who pass gas at feasts) or a VERY specific archetype (i.e. welsh people who
wear too many hats and write bad poetry). This poem does not need to be
about any specific person at all and should not mention any names
specifically.

It is my hope that the entrants will be able to send me their poems prior
to the smackdown so that I might put them together into a small notebook to
share with ALL the entrants. However, in the full knowledge that many
people do not finish their poems until the last minute (and I include
myself in this list) it is NOT a requirement that you send me your poems
first. You can show up the day of the smackdown with your poems written on
(unused) toilet paper and you shall still be heartily welcome.

Any questions, concerns, or dirty limericks should be addressed directly to
me, your humble moderator.
